Binding Potential of Dental Composites

Dental Composites

In a previous article, we introduced you to “pink esthetics” and gingival restorations (learn more about “pink esthetics” here), however “pink esthetics” exist in a unity with “white esthetics”, which is also worth focusing one’s attention on. Polymerization shrinkage of these dental composites remains a major defining factor for a successful and tooth restoration. Apart from polymerization shrinkage factor, bonding abilities of composite resins and flowable is also an interesting subject of study.

Recent appearance and development of flowable composites on the dental market has resolved the low level shrinkage issue, flowable composites like Flowable Composites from Dentex are claimed to have lower viscosity, which significantly broadens the spectrum of their indications. According to the research by Estafan D, Schulman A, Calamia J concluded that “one year clinical study evaluating Class V restorations using a flowable composite demonstrated that all restorations were intact and showed no signs of postoperative sensitivity after one year.”[2] Also, it was proved that flowable composites are a perfect choice for non-carious lesions.

Composite Resin + Flowable Composite = SUCCESS!

When combining both, composite resin and flowable composite, the latter doesn’t only enable cure for 4mm depth, moreover it reduces polymerization shrinkage of laminated composite materials, which makes filling procedure way more simpler and saves you plenty of time.

Yes, it’s quite true that posterior composites are usually placed alone and not combined with any other composite type. But for better layering it’s worth testing the technique of combining properties of several restorative materials within single restoration. Moreover, the flow composite plays the role of stress absorbent between dentine and the shrinking composite.

Conclusion

Flowable composites are highly desired to use in day-to-day restorations, as their usage helps to get through polymerization shrinkage negative effects and according to Biomend Resarch study “can be placed and cured in a single layer of up to 4 mm in thickness.” [1]
